How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). After a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, hCG levels begin to rise rapidly, often doubling every two to three days in early pregnancy. This hormone can be detected through urine or blood tests.

Testing too early can lead to a false negative, even if you are pregnant. For the most reliable result, most women test one to two days after their missed period.

Common early pregnancy symptoms may include:

  • A missed period
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Tender or swollen breasts
  • Increased fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Light spotting or mild cramping
  • Bloating or constipation
  • Mood changes

While these symptoms can offer clues, a pregnancy test is the first step in getting clear answers about whether you are pregnant.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your visit includes a no-cost pregnancy test in a confidential setting. One of our trained advocates will review your results with you and answer any immediate questions you may have.

If your test is positive, you may qualify for a limited ultrasound. An ultrasound reveals critical information for your health, including how far along you are and whether the pregnancy is progressing, which helps clarify what options are available to you.

You are welcome to bring a partner or support person with you if you would like. When scheduling, please choose your desired location. We offer care at eight locations across the Chicago Metropolitan area, Rockford, and Carbondale.

You Are Not Alone

If you think you might be pregnant, you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. We’re here to listen, answer your questions, and walk with you every step of the way.

FAQ

Could I still be pregnant if my test was negative?

Yes, it’s possible. If you tested very early, your hCG levels may not have been high enough to detect yet. Waiting a few days and testing again, or scheduling an appointment for free testing, can help give you accurate answers.

What else could be causing my symptoms?

Pregnancy isn’t the only reason for symptoms like nausea, fatigue, or a missed period. Stress, hormonal changes, illness, or other health concerns can cause similar signs.

Can a pregnancy test ever be wrong if it’s positive?

False-positive results are rare, but they can happen. One possible reason is a very early pregnancy loss, sometimes called a chemical pregnancy, when hCG is present for a short time even though the pregnancy is no longer developing. In uncommon cases, certain fertility medications containing hCG or specific hormonal conditions may also affect results.

Do you provide abortions?

Aid for Women does not provide or refer for abortions. We offer pregnancy tests and limited ultrasounds for qualifying clients to help you understand your options.
