Clarity Beyond a Pregnancy Test
A positive pregnancy test confirms pregnancy hormones, but it doesn’t provide a complete picture of your health. An ultrasound offers the next layer of important medical information.
At Aid for Women, we provide no-cost, limited obstetrical ultrasounds for clients with a positive pregnancy test. Scans are performed by qualified medical professionals in a private, respectful setting.
Why an Ultrasound Matters
Ultrasounds use sound waves to create a real-time image of the inside of the uterus. This helps clarify three critical aspects of early pregnancy:
Viability
Not all pregnancies continue as expected. About 1 in 4 known pregnancies end in miscarriage, most often in the first trimester, often without noticeable symptoms. An ultrasound can show whether the pregnancy is developing normally and if a heartbeat is present.
Gestational Age
Some medical decisions are time-sensitive. Accurately confirming how far along you are protects your health and ensures safe care.
For example, a medical abortion is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks of gestation, making accurate dating essential for safety and informed care.
Pregnancy Location
Approximately 2% of all pregnancies develop outside the uterus, known as an ectopic pregnancy. This condition cannot continue normally and can become a serious medical emergency if untreated. An ultrasound confirms that the pregnancy is in the uterus.

FAQ
When is it best to have an initial ultrasound?
Many women schedule their first ultrasound between 7 and 12 weeks. If your dates are uncertain or you have concerning symptoms, an earlier scan may be recommended.
What is a “limited obstetrical ultrasound”?
A limited ultrasound focuses on key medical information: confirming the pregnancy’s location, estimating gestational age, and checking for a heartbeat. It is not a substitute for full prenatal care.
Is the ultrasound appointment confidential?
Absolutely. All visits to Aid for Women are completely private and free. Your information is kept secure.
